Advantages of Kindergarten Homeschooling

I have shared in another post about Angel’s trial preschool experience. Someone asked if I did enroll her in preschool. Well, it was actually a preparation way to see how prepared she is in going to formal school. I have no doubt that she’s ready, except that when I asked her again a few days before re-enrolling her siblings if she wants to go to school, she said she doesn’t want to. Obviously, it’s because of separation anxiety.

A virtuous woman speaks with wisdom and faithful instruction, her children arise up and bless her. ~ Proverbs 31:26, 28

So, I entertained the idea of homeschooling again. I actually homeschooled my 3 children before. I enrolled them and got their curriculum from Christian Liberty Academy School System. It’s the cheapest (because it’s a non-profit system) I could find on the web. But I can say that the materials are great quality and follow the K-12 curriculum. So, eventually, when we decided to get our children to formal school, they had no problems getting accepted in the K2, Grades 1 and 2 levels.

Back to Angel, I talked to my husband and asked if he’s agreeable to the idea. He agreed after some discussion. I talked to Angel and asked for her commitment to listen and obey when we are having homeschool classes.  She promised. As for me, I have to rework my schedule and fit in 1-2 hours of homeschooling in between home chores, work online, etc.

Why Homeschool?

Angel’s books are on its way. I hope we get them soon. Just want to think out loud by sharing what I think are the advantages of Kindergarten homeschooling Angel.

Flexible schedule. Angel and I can follow our own schedule of classes at home. No waking her up very early in the morning.

Saves Money. Another advantage of homeschooling is the money we were able to save. The books cost only around P6000. We were supposed to spend P24000 for her preschool. Of course, we also save on other expenses like for uniform, transportation, etc.

Quality Education. Also, I know the quality of education I can give her, not to mention the one-on-one instruction unlike in a class of 10-15 or 30 students.

K-12 Curriculum Compliant. The books we will get are excellent for covering lessons from the Nursery to Kindergarten 2 levels here in the Philippines. That is why my 3 children before never needed to take Nursery, K1 and K2. It’s only Kindergarten then Grade 1. Saved us a lot of time and expenses, considering that now K-12 is implemented in the Philippines.

Fulfillment. Lastly, it’s so fulfilling to know that I played a vital role in laying the foundation for the education of my child. When I see my other children excel in class, I feel so blessed and I thank God for the opportunity of having homeschooled them.

What do you think about homeschooling?

Update (1/19/2017): I'm really so happy to have homeschooled Angel that year. We enrolled her in the community school her siblings go to the following year. I'm proud to say that she's been on top of her class for 3 years now. Glory to God!

i didn’t homeschool my 2 kids, they went to school at the age of 2 years old, alternative school ang pinasukan nila, siyempre may follow-up pa rin sa bahay; i am hesitant of homeschool, tingin ko iyong development ng socialization skills ang maiiwanan; for you okay lang siguro ang ganung set-up because you have several kids

Hi Maxine. I just made sure that the kids had time to socialize with other children, i.e. in church, with neighbor. The behavior of the child when it comes to socialization still mainly depends on the child’s temperament. My 2 boys were very opposite when they went to school, one was very shy and the other is very friendly.

Hi! It’s just inspiring to read a post about homeschooling. I am thinking about it too, perhaps I can also do this. But my husband isn’t sure about it. K is still 2 years old and 2 months and we have a few years to prepare for his formal education. If we’re going to homeschool, I must have already established a good online job that I can fit in my schedule as a WAHM instead of the 8-5 schedule working outside the house.

Hi K. I have read somewhere that even at 2 you can begin to read books and show pictures to your child. That is part of teaching early. I see your point about being able to set aside time to homeschool. I did not work outside the home since I had children so the homeschooling option was very appropriate for me.
we have been homeschooling my kids for the past 3 years and it has really been an amazing journey. i dont see any problems with socialization at all. contrary to what most people believe in.

Good to hear that Christine. Thanks for the input.

Ms. Chin chin, I’m very interested in learning about home schooling. Both my partner and I am open to the idea. However, I cannot find reputable institutions in our area. Can I ask where Christian Liberty Academy is?
Chin chin said…
Hi Maan. Christian Liberty Academy’s office is in Illinois, US but they ship orders anywhere in the world. I used to stay in Saudi Arabia and they shipped my kids’ books there. Now, I’m here in the Philippines and waiting for the arrival of my orders. I think there are also homeschool groups here in the Philippines, but one which I saw sells books + admin fee almost at the same price as expensive private schools. I was looking at the option of just buying the books in the bookstore (which is viable) but since I already am familiar with that of CLASS, I got Angel’s books from them.

Hi I read that you had homeschooling here in Saudi Arabia. may I ask how your school sends the books. Hindi ba hinohold sa custom? And how much po ang shipping sa Jeddah. I have a KG and magiistart kami ng homeschooling coz minsan may out of town trips si hubby na hindi pwedeng hindi kami sumama. Maybe you can advice me please. Thanks

Hi Abby. As I mentioned in the blog post, I ordered my kids’ curriculum from CLASS, Illinois, USA. I got the Kindergarten CLASS plan, cost around $235 plus $80(?) shipping then. The books were insured which was good because one time the books were delayed for more than 2 months, I think. I informed CLASS and they sent another package without additional cost to us. I always prayed for the books to arrive safely. The box had a big cross on them (you know how they don’t like that) but I thank God because we got everything safely. They were addressed to my husband’s office.

There are many available options online. If you want to teach your kids how to read, I used Headsprout.com (now mimio) ($100) and it helped my 4/5 year old to read up to Grade 1 level in just 6 months yata (there were 80 lessons). Then it was easier for me to teach them using textbooks. You can also use Starfall.com which is free.
Just let me know if I have answered your question or if you have other questions.

Thanks for dropping by.

I read about homeschooling and I don’t think I can do it considering that I’m a working mother. I salute all parents who home school their children.
Chin chin said…
A mom or dad must be available to do it. From my experience, though, it only takes 1-2 hours to homeschool a child in Kindergarten level, maximum 3 hours.

i think ill love the idea of homeschooling..i am still single but i am taking good care of a niece.. she is just in a public school but i make sure she is properly trained on school matters. I bought her educational materials to let her drive a passion in studying.

Actually, when I think of it, now that my older kids are going to regular school, it still feels like I’m homeschooling them when they come home with tons of assignment or when reviewing for exams. With homeschooling my preschoolers before, we just have about 2 hours of lesson for the day and that’s it. Oh well…

I didn’t have any idea about homeschooling until recently. I’ve been educated in regular schools and I’m sending my elder son to a regular school as well. How is it sis?

Homeschooling has its pros as I’ve shared in the post. It has cons also, like there’s a tendency that sometimes my child doesn’t want to study, or listen to me, or sometimes I feel that maybe I’m missing in teaching something. I guess those are two/three reasons why eventually we sent our older children to school. Plus, I also got busy with taking care of 5 children of different ages including a baby. I feel it’s more difficult teaching the older ones than preschoolers. Overall, it was worth it.

I think homeschooling is only doable if at least one parent is stay at home kind. Child’s education would be a gamble if both parents goes to work like us.

It’s posts like this that make me want to homeschool, but knowing me, I don’t think I could be patient enough. And my hubby doesn’t agree to it.
Chin chin said…
Looking at the different comments here, it’s obvious that homeschooling isn’t for everybody. I guess that’s why there are different forms of educating our children.

hey this is nice. I’ll keep that school in mind for home schooling.. are you also familiar with PACES? not sure of the spelling.
Chin chin said…
I looked at the website of PACES because it was mentioned by one blog recently but did not dig deep. Since I’m familiar with CLASS, I just got the curriculum from them instead of PACES. Thanks Tin for the visit.

Teaching any age group can be very challenging yet rewarding work so I applaud moms/dads who home school. It takes tremendous discipline and effort and as an educator myself, I know it is a ton of work… Blessings to you!
Yes, I’ve been gone awhile.

i’ve always been open about homeschooling it’s my hubby who wants the boys to mingle with peers and be exposed to the big school.

That is a considerable amount of savings, plus the fact that you get first hand mentoring of your daughter. I am very much in favor of homeschooling, particularly in the early stages of a child’s education when you want to develop character and values. When they have a good foundation, you can be more confident to release them to traditional school later. It’s like equipping them first at home…

Homeschooling is a good thing especially if you are living in a place far away from school buildings. In our case, the school is just few steps away so instead of homeschooling, we sent our daughter at the school for her to experience school surroundings.

Yes, you’re doing excellently at it! I also entertained the idea of homeschooling before, only that I am a working mom. I wish you all the best!

we are planning to send Matt to Nursery, but according to my sister, we can do it at home na lang. She will give us module they are teaching in their school for nursery.
Chin chin said…
Actually, you can do it kasi di naman ganoon kahirap at di ganoon ka-taxing kung oras ang pag-uusapan. Your Matt will be okay.

ang laki ng masi-save! grabe, commercialized talaga ang education, paano na iyong can’t afford?

I agree na malaki nga ang masi-save. I wish lahat ng education ganoon din ka-afford.

My husband was homeschooled when he was young, and he turned out fine

I am for homeschooling but my husband isn’t. I think this should be a commitment that everyone in the family has to agree on for it to be successful.
Chin chin said…
Both mom and dad should agree otherwise it won’t work.

I’ve read some homeschooling blogs but I don’t think my kids can recognize me as the authority in teaching since their grandma was a highschool teacher and their dad is a college instructor. I do envy those who have the patience and time to devote to homeschooling their kids. Good luck.

Just yesterday we are so confused whether to enroll Matt to Nursery this June or not. First, the school near us won’t accept him kasi he will just turn two. Mahigpit daw and Dep Ed now, kelangan nasa age bracket requirement and they just offer K1 and K2. We found a school pero medyo malayo naman. Then sabi ko kay hubby, since he knows naman na the alphabet, numbers, colors, shapes etc, I will just teach him at home na lang. Her sister will give us books daw. And then I came across a homeschooling thread and it enlighten me, hehe. And your post is just in time sis. I research for possible lessons and luckily I found a very helpful site. I also inquire at Catholic Filipino Academy. Un lang kasi I am working full time but since the lessons will just take an hour, I will do it at night. Matt shows positive signs naman. I am teaching him na kasi since last week prior to our decision to homeschool him. I will post about our weekly lessons soon. I am actually excited and I want to show that being a working mom cannot hinder my determination to homeschool my son.
Chin chin said…
That’s good for you and Matt. It would continue to strengthen the bond between you and your child. I’m sure many will learn from reading your homeschooling experience on your blog.

Wow~ that’s nice! I think its great idea for you and Angel, it gonna be like one on one teaching and I’m sure she gonna learn a lot and be prepared.:)

I heard about the benefits of homeschooling because our Pastor’s children were all home schooled. Discipline lang talaga and the know-how and needed for one to succeed in this.

I don’t homeschool the kids but supplement school them as i feel it is important that they go to school and interact with other kids.

I think homeschooling is definitely a wonderful alternative. I hope that there are more institutions offering a curriculum and an affordable plan when I have my own children. I’d love the opportunity to do it. thanks for sharing your success story.

i might consider this in the future.. hehe

I would have considered homeschooling if I have not been working . For mommies who can’t homeschool, they can “afterschool” naman because we cannot totally rely on traditional schools to be giving education to our children. The internet is a great resource for homeschooling materials. I usually go to currclick.com to find appropriate materials for my kid.

I actually like the idea of kindergarten home schooling. I might as well do that too, but that could mean quitting my job.
Chin chin said…
You don’t have to quit your job if you could make a schedule that would work for you. I only spent 1-2 hours of homeschooling before with my older kids who were in the Kindergarten level. And I actually teach them in the afternoon because they wake up late in the morning. Their father even see them studying after coming home from work.
