Which Brand of Electric Fan Do You Recommend?

It’s really hot now and it’s so untimely that one of our fans gave up on us. We only have 2 working. Actually, since we came here in the Philippines 2 years ago, we’ve already bought 6 fans and I’m not satisfied with how they worked for only a short time.

We bought 2 Standard industrial stand fans, one broke in less than a year while the other one is still working. We bought 1 Union desk fan and this one lasted 2 years. Then, we bought 1 Dowell stand fan because of a sale but then it was defective within one month. We brought it to their service center, they got it fixed but then the entire head (with the fan blade) of the fan flew off (nasira ang hinang).

It’s a good thing nobody was hurt in our family. The service center got it fixed but it only worked 1 or 2 months, I think. Then, we bought 1 Hanabishi desk fan but it only worked 3 or 4 months. We actually rarely used it but still it broke.

What’s wrong with the quality of electric fans nowadays? We thought that these brands are good quality because they’ve been around for years. Our uncle who is an electrician said that it’s because of the thermostat or fuse of the fan which is necessary to guard against overheating and fire.

Though the fans have one year warranty, it’s actually a hassle to go to the service center which is very far from our place (for some brands). We, therefore, have simply asked an electrician to look at the fans but they have not been successful to fix them. Well, they fixed it but after a few days, it’s broken again. Hopefully, the electrician recommended by our sister-in-law last week will be able to fix it for good. I haven’t seen and tested the repaired fans.

To supplement the only 1 fan we have in the house 2 weeks ago, we bought another brand, Asahi. I hope this one will last long. I must admit the fans we have bought have prices ranging from P900 – P1600. They’re not the really expensive ones. I wanted to buy the more expensive one but my husband declined. Is it really better to buy the more expensive brands or models?

The point of this post, aside from the rant, is to ask what brand of electric fan you are using and which one you actually recommend? If you have bought recently (2-5 years) those available in the market and it’s still working now I would like to know what brand. I want to be specific in asking because units bought about 10 years ago, the old fans, are known to be more durable.

Please share in the comments below so we could see and consider what is really worth buying.  Your comments will be very much appreciated. Thank you for sharing.

Update:  Thanks to some helpful comments I got from FB, particularly about industrial fans. Next time, I will avoid the industrial fans because they tend to overheat more and they actually consume more energy. I’m actually trying to find the post and comments on my FB timeline but I can’t seem to find it. I’m sure I didn’t delete it. Oh well.  Also, thanks to the electrician my sister-in-law recommended because the fans worked great. Now, I know who to look for when needing electric fan repair.

By the way, I searched online what features we should be looking for when choosing an electric fan. Here are the recommendations:

1. Safety- the fan should have a UL listing and must be certified

2. Ease of use- Though we usually buy a fan that is ready to use, some fans are to be assembled or may be installed like ceiling fans. Be sure to choose fans that are easy to carry, fix, and assemble the parts.

3. Low-Noise level- No one wants a loud fan that interrupts their sleep or makes too much noise in a quiet room. So, as much as possible, test a fan on display in the shop if you like how it sounds.

4. The size and number of fan blades - Lately, there have been many fans with different fan blades options available on the market. Which ones are better?

In the case of ceiling fans, the fan's blades need to be wide enough, so that they can cover a wider area. Fans with 5 or more blades used to be thought of as better, but now those with 3 blades seem to have better performance because they can operate silent enough, and can move faster for better air circulation with less pressure on the motor and less power consumption.

I hope this additional information will help you find a good type and brand of an electric fan.

Asahi is good brand I think, We don’t used electric fan here in my place but I’m sure the one that you bought is worth buying for..:)

i highly recommend Asahi electric fan. we bought 2 stand fans 6 years ago & both are still functioning well even up to this time.

Oh, I hope that our Asahi will last that long, too.

I have a 3D desk fan. It’s a bit more expensive, but it’s super sturdy. And for a small desk fan, it’s pretty strong.
Chin chin said…
Patty, thanks for the tip about 3D.
I have bought many different brands of fans.. some of them only last a few months..while others last much longer. What I get now are mainly air coolers- where you can add water to it.. or put an ice -pack.. Honeywell is a good brand.
Chin chin said…
I’ll keep that in mind in case I buy air coolers, Dominique.
One thing that I learned about buying (after years of buying the cheaper ones) is to buy the more expensive one if it ensures quality over the cheaper brands. We can use it longer and we’re spared the trouble when the appliance is damaged easily. =)

The electric fan that we are using now is a hand-me-down from my parents and I can’t tell the brand because this is old and the printed letters have faded and the cover at the center is nowhere to be found lol. But it’s still doing its work, lucky for us. I just hope it won’t give up too soon.
Chin chin said…
Old fans are really durable. Good your parents gave you that unit.

I hope you will find a durable fan. I am not sure about our electric fan’s brand (I think it is asahi) and it was with us for years. It was a freebie for a 12kg washing machine we bought. I dont use it that much though (I live in Baguio)

last year we bought camel and until now it still works smoothly. Also our industrial fan is Nikon which is a wedding gift for us way back 2014 and it was still in good condition.

I remember our fan was Standard. It lasted for 10 years I think.

Hanabishi E-fan ko, pumutok. Sa office kita ko luma na ang isang stand fan pero maayos pa rin, National ang tatak.

Investing in a more expensive fan will enable you and your family to use it for a longer time. Similarly, regular oiling will help the motor of the fan work efficiently too.

I wish that all of our electric fans now will also last that long. Thanks for the input.

All are made in China. Everything is made in China. I think I was made in China. LOL

5 years ago I bought two fans for P1650. It was a buy one/take one promo. The fans are Zeus Home Brand. Obviously, not a "Name" brand product, but both have worked well even after I damaged both blades. Once when I was moving one of the fans my finger slipped through the guard and the blade hit my finger. Ouch! The blade was bent. Then a few months later I was walking past the other fan and the drawstring on my shorts got sucked into the fan and bent that blade. I just used my hammer to straighten out both blades and the fans continue to run without any problems.

Years ago name brand products meant they were actually made someplace other than China. Now many so-called name brand products are made in China. People think Apple's i-Phone is a name brand product from the USA but the truth is that most of their product line comes from China. Personally, I believe i-Phones are grossly overpriced and it is only advertising that sells their products. My Huawei phone has a better camera and screen than an i-Phone and it was 60% less expensive than a comparable featured i-Phone. Many companies (Samsung, LG, Canon, GE, etc.) have some of their products manufactured in China.

I have two Kolin air-con units that were manufactured in Thailand. Both have worked well. One is 5 years old and the other is 2 years old. Why did I decide to purchase the Kolin brand? I took the time to read reviews from actual customers who had purchased these products. Price was a consideration, but value is also dependent on the service life of the product.

Customer reviews are very important in my decisions when making a purchase. I mean, real customer reviews that offer complete information (Price, longevity, origin, power consumption, ease of cleaning, service availability, etc.) as opposed to a review that says, "Uh, I think it was an XYZ brand, but I am not sure."

When we got married, we received 4 efans as gifts. We gave one to my mother in law and we took home the 3 fans. Out of the four, two are still working well. One is Nikon and the other one is 3D. We also bought two wall fan, Camel and Hanabishi. All still working well. It’s so hot nowadays that I wanted to buy an air cooler or air condition unit., hehe.
Chin chin said…
It is very hot and for sure electric bills will shoot up. It’s not a wonder that 2 or more fans are working at the same time. Buying an aircon will be comfortable but expensive as well. Better buy the inverter aircon to save on power consumption.

I prefer Hanabishi Cool Blossom stand fan that I bought at goods.ph because it has thermal fuse protected motor that prevents over heating due to continues usage.

I highly recommend KDK fan, we bought 1 in 2008 and did not have any problem with it except for the need for some oil after many years. The brand is from Japan and so the motor is really good. Here in the Philippines, I am only able to see this brand in SM Appliance Stores. The motor can run upto 72hours non-stop without overheating. And the lowest speed, No. 1 is like the No. 2 speed in other brands but the blow is not rough. The built is very simple and has rollers for easy moving. Very good brand.
Chin chin said…
Thank you Catherine for sharing your opinion. I know the KDK fan brand and I think we have one before. It’s just rare to find this brand nowadays.

My grandparents still have a working 35 year old National fan. My dad tried to look for the now-renamed Panasonic fan but the store said they stopped producing. Probably the cheap “throw-away” fans eased it out from the competition.

I can still see some Panasonic fans for sale, but they are priced higher than Asahi or Hanabishi. Maybe they are indeed longer lasting. Thanks Redge for commenting.

I feel you but my story of buying fans stop when I bought a camel stand fan way back 2010, I’ve desided to buy another 3 fans and they’re all still working…

Nice to hear good reports about Camel branded fans.

First of all I regularly clean the fans and once a month or so oil and grease the rotor. If need be open the motor a little bit by unscrewing the 4 screws holding the motor together and drip new Diesel Motor Oil. Remember just a few drops on the rotor to the outer covering. You need not separate all the parts like the YouTube above. But if you can better so that you will be able to clean every part.
Here is my feedback about different brand of fan:
Asahi – Great motor but the plastics cracks thru time wall fan 16″ 2010, still working and strong. Another Asahi
stand fan still working and strong. Remember regular cleaning.
Nikon – Great motor, heat on the motor is less, because it has bigger fins inside. Needs regular oiling (fan since
2009 )
Camel – Wall fan Great motor but the plastics and grill are soft, probably because this was bought at 900 peso in
2011. Still working blowing strong but no more oscilation. Stand fan same as previous but bought it
2000
Fukuda – Stand fan model 2013 december worth 1,200 pesos, great no problems just regular cleaning.
Same model but bought it March 2014 at 900 pesos, Terrible as the oscilation keeps on breaking 4 times brough it to Fukuda service center at cubao ( Farmers wet market area). Eventually the technician changed the osilator motor with a good one. But still Motor almost give way on its 14 month of service. But fortunately I disassembled it like the you tube above and is not working. Please take note the 2013 model and the 2014 model has different design internally. That is why there where able to sell the 2014 fan cheap. Lesson is cheap isn’t better.
3d Turbo – This is 18″ industrial fan 125 watts, great, bought is 2013, no issues just regular dusting and sometimes oil a bit. Since 2013 I have only oiled this unit twice without opeing the motor.
KDK – good fan still blows strong and good osciallation about give or take 90 degrees. (2007)
Hannabishi – deskfan almost like ACE but still I will lean towards Ace if its for small fans. (2008)
Ace – 40 watts deskfan. I have really abused this little sucker, Seldom clean it, in its 5 years of service. Probably 3 times in 5 years, oiled it twice. But this old faithfull still works no problem, blows great, oscilation good.
Chin chin said…
Wow! You’ve owned plenty of brands of electric fans already. We only have tried 3D, Asahi, Union and Hanabishi. Thanks for sharing. This can definitely help me and other info seekers on this topic.
By the way, when you say Ace, does it mean Ace Hardware’s brand of electric fan?

Try to buy “National” brand, “Panasonic” na name niya ata ngayon. About 10 to 15 years na ata yung electric fan namin. Basta grade 1 (1990’s) pa lang ako nun nandyan na yung electric fan namin and until now in good condition pa rin.

Don't buy Panasonic. We bought 2 standfans for 2000 each last year. Sira na pareho ngayon. Tried to have it fixed but cost is equivalent to 1 brand new Panasonic electric fan so wag nalang. Akala rin namin maganda yung brand kasi in store ang tahimik ng motor pero madali ring masira. Sayang pera.

Hi Mr. Noel Ocampo, I wonder if you already tried mitsutech fan? The that you can buy through SM Savemore or hypermarkets? I'm considering buying their promo of buy 3 take 1 wallfan. Got any reviews? Thanks

I had the newer Panasonic stand fan F-40LEP. After a few years of use, the rotor shaft kept on freezing. Tried cleaning, greasing and oiling the shaft. Didn't last a week before problem re-occurs. And now, the thin stator wire kept on breaking thereby stopping the fan motor completely. And now broken multiple stator wires after fixing twice. I gave up finally. The new ones doesn't really last that long. Time to look for other brands. I had better luck with Standard (industrial - metal blades) stand fans before.

I bought hanabishi fan last April and now it's not working anymore.

I don't recommend buying 3D fans. We have bought 5 units of these and all did not withstand within more or less a year and a half without repair. I guess a factor is also depending on the usage. But lo and behold, 3D fans can't really last long. Some of our units have been repaired 2times. Still looking for a good brand...

We bought Panasonic stand fan model F-405SS-MB on Oct 21, 2017. But now Aug 5, 2018, it stopped working. we brought it to the electrician, and he said there's no available spare parts locally. As before panasonic or national brands are durable, but when the chinese manufacture it, the quality degraded. 3Ds nowadays are also not as durable as the 3D before. It lasts less that a year too. The 3D we bought wayback year 1998 is still working good. We also had standard brand but still it did not last long. We will try to buy Asahi today as we heard its made in Japan. So sad that chinese products are dominating the Philippine market...
Chin chin said…
We only buy Asahi fans now because it's the only brand we found to have lasted longer than one year. The last we bought was actually two years ago pa and it is still working at malakas pa ang motor.

I agree. we had a 3d rota-aire deskfan.

It's 2020, and I also have the need to buy electric fans in anticipation for summer months. We have a Sharp stand fan which my brother bought in 1995 and it's still working.... but I noticed that these last few weeks, it's not as before. Dati-rati yung no. 1 nya, the pinakamahina is pinakamalakas na sa ibang brand. So you can imagine kung gaano kalakas yun no. 3. Pero need ko na syang pagpahingahin, di na sya kasinlakas as before, and I think i have to bring this sa electrician baka need to clean the motor. Anyway, almost 25 yrs na sya so very durable and veru worth it. I'm looking for Sharp brands pero sabi sa SM Appliance wala na daw nun. We have 2 Hanabishi, 1 stand fan and 1 industrial fan. yung stand fan natumba isang beses, after that di na sya gumagana ng maayos. every now and then kailangan langisan, dahil kung hindi, di na gagana. And it stopped working altogether because I forgot to turn it off after magdamag na gamit (more than 8 hrs). and to think na 2 yrs lang sya, bumigay na. The industrial fan is still working, pero maingay na sya sa unang pag-on. di na rin kasinlakas as before. I went to SM and one agent there told me that KDK is durable because the motor's been tested running for 7000 hours non-stop and proven safe. Japan-made sya and the price for the stand fan is 2385php. I am actually considering buying 1 before summer kasi baka magkaprice increase.

Chin chin said…
We bought a KDK kasabay ng Asahi before, siguro 4 or more years ago na. Yung Asahi gumagana pa rin pero yung KDK hindi na. Maganda talaga Asahi though mas mahal siya kaysa ibang brand.

My brother uses asahi deskfan and stand fan yr 2015 until now working fine pa rin no repairs made linis lang alikabok and palit ng blades kasi bumagsak at nagcrack.

Used hanabishi and nova fan 1yr 5mos lang tinatagal mahina na motor.

Now I'm using ASAHI na rin 1yr na sya sa akin and working great pa rin. Planning to buy yung mga tig 3000 nila ngayon. For me sobrang tatag ng motor nila makapal yung cables and tama lang yung kapal ng metals unlike sa hanabishi.

I would say fujidenzo is the best we tried. We got it using since i was in highschool and still alive and working till i finish college of 5 years.

Do not buy the Panasonic and KDK fans with the small motor. It is not durable. Make sure if you buy a kdk fan it has the big motor because that one is the one that lasts a long time. I also recommend Asahi because their fans last really long. I would question the quality of plastic from Asahi though.
Anonymous said…
Yes buy the KDK fans with the big motor because i have 2 kdks one with the big one and one with the small one. The kdk with the small motor barely lasted a year while the one with the big one already lasted 5 years without problems. Also panasonic is no longer a viable option since their motors are small now. I would also recommend asahi fans and hanabishi fans. Since i bought them they had no problems

I classify our electric fans into two eras - when my dad was still alive (20 years ago) and after. From his time we have two 3Ds and two Standard stand fans. All still working. The Standard fans were bought in 1996 I think. A Panasonic, from 2002, still working. I bought a Cool Air (2010) from SM Appliance, I don't think they sell this anymore, a Dowell floor fan (from 2005, worked well until it was stolen in 2011) and a Hanabishi Summer Wind wall fan (2014?) — Don’t buy, the worst. We used it as a fan in our dressing room and it failed within a year. I lived with it on the wall as a useless decoration and finally had it repaired this year (June) and noticed this month (October) that it doesn't run immediately, it already takes long to start. Im afraid it will fail again.

The Cool Air needed repair also this year - the motor would run but the blades would not oscillate. So thats almost 10 years where it was working well. I also had it repaired this June.

A Camel stand fan, purchased in 2015 I think, from Anson’s, working very well until this year. The number 1 speed was very good, it has slowed down, and the number 2 speed also. Maybe it’s from overuse this year as we are all still at home on General quarantine and it’s on almost 12 hours a day. We only turn it off during lunch, when my mom takes a nap, and during dinner. Then on again for an hour or two until bedtime.

The worst fan we ever had - the Hanabishi. Been very lucky with Standard, 3D, Dowell, Panasonic, Cool Air, and Camel.

3D is highly recommended. Been using the deskfan for 3 years,no issues. Nalaglag sya twice, medyo umingay lang ng konting konti. We are not maintaining it,not oiling etc. pero buhay na buhay. KDK is also matibay, been using almost 2 years. The WORST fan is Hanabishi! The medium air cirulator type (Php 800.00) - we have used for only less than a year and sobrang ingay na ngayon and halos walang hangin kang maramdaman!!! Also, Hanabishi microwave oven only lasted for 1 year!

We have the oldest 30+yrs standard boxt type fan (but w/repairs over the years), 3dowell industrial fans (the 2 are 20+yrs old & the remaining 1 is 20yrs) & lastly 1-union stand fan almost about 10yrs. All units have been repaired already but all are still working and currently in use until today. Among the 5 fans that we have, dowell is the best brand (w/less repairs, durability & strong/cool airflow).
Stay safe everyone & Godbless!

my family had a toshiba brand which we never encountered any problem with. i think it was made in japan. never put any oil in it. we just gave it away since it looked really old. the motor's was still okay, though.

as for our present brand kdk is the brand to beat. never had any issue with it. never placec any oil in it. my only issue is the design.

we have also asahi and union. both have undergone repairs. union is one brand i wouldn't consider re-purchasing again
. i actually have four union fans. they heat up pretty fast. and you can only bring them for repairs at ace hardware, at the place of purchase. i tried having it repaired at a different service center but they flatly refused me...

Asahi industrial fan, I have 3 of them and 2 of them is already 10years old and the other one is 12 years old. Very durable and may 5 year warranty ang motor.
